2010-12-30: Lubeck (GER) – Treibsand

Tour Diary

It’s over! My voice had taken its leave and already passed on to the new year, leaving behind a voiceless singer and his helpless band. But apparently my voice forgot about the fact that VAN CANTO were also there! Anyone who is on tour with 4 male singers and a female singer is definitely allowed to lend them at some point. This decision is made in Hamburg during breakfast, before taking off to Lubeck.

We should rather perform an extraordinary show than cancel the whole thing – we all agree on that! Accordingly, one could now hear all possible renditions of IN LEGEND songs coming out of the VAN CANTO backstage room. I kept myself busy printing out lyric sheets and tried my best at pantomiming. Shortly after, we had split the songs among the band members as follows:
Ross, being a passionate IN LEGEND fan himself, would take over the lion’s share by performing the songs “Heya,” “The Healer,” and “Pandemonium.” Stef would lend his voice for “Soul Apart,” Inga would bring “Heaven Inside” to new life, Sly would finally be able to unwrap his soul voice by singing “At Her Side,” and Ike would make “Vortex” shine in a new splendor.

What a great plan! We only practiced the whole set during a short soundcheck and then we were ready. Whoever thinks that VAN CANTO are hard-boiled professionals who don’t know something like stage fright anymore, should have been with us in the backstage room during the last hour before the start of the show. All of them felt like before their first own gig ever and were therefore really nervous – very funny ;-) And in the middle of them all: Daniel, Dennis, and me, who apparently had come to a close with everything already.

In a coma-like state of mind, we finally entered the stage on time… After the first verse of “Heya,” which took up the very last bit of my croaky voice, it was about time for Ross’ comet-like performance – following astounded looks in the faces of the audience that turned into real euphoria after only two takes. After a short explanation, all people were looking forward to a special evening and were excited to see who would come up next. The Van Cantians performed their allotted songs confidently and also made this set a warm-up for their own show.

In the end, though, we wanted to close the set in our own way by performing “Elekboe.” This song was originally planned as an instrumental rendition but I couldn’t keep myself from offering the “open mic” to the audience of the Treibsand, and only seconds later Misha joined us onstage and had solemnly agreed to sing the song. Well – at least he looked terrific doing so! Next time he will hopefully also know how to sing the song :-)

All in all, it was a very funny evening where we made the best out of a not so ideal situation. I hope the people in Lubeck will once again welcome us – then, of course, in the usual line-up!

The next (and last) tour block will take us to Frankfurt first, so stay tuned!
Bastian

Hehe, to my Defense I have to say that I rather was pushed up on stage instead of agreein on it. But after a almost mindblowing minute of stage-fright I actually managed to get my self together and at least try to look good ;)
